“In presenting the dharma, we are talking about a black-and-white world. You should realize that. It is not that everything is all right—in fact, there is darkness and there is light. Sometimes people have the idea that Buddhist wisdom tells you to keep everything quiet and peaceful . . . But that approach is slightly naive. So it is important to emphasize prajna. With prajna, or discriminating awareness, you see that samsara is black and quite terrible; and freedom from samsara, or nirvana, is extremely white and immaculate.”

In this online workshop we will explore the Buddhist understanding of peace. There is an emphasis on peace or peacefulness throughout the Buddhist teachings, but what does that actually mean? Our world is not all that peaceful on either an individual or societal level. There is violence, there is warfare, there is hatred. How do we cultivate peace in the midst of this very “black-and-white world”?
This topic raises many difficult questions. May attachment to peace become merely another form of violence? May violence be the only way to prevent greater violence? Is it possible to practice nonviolence in the world as it is?
Bring your questions and your experiences as we look into the challenge of cultivating peace in a violent world. Our workshop will include talks, discussions, group meditation and contemplative investigations.
