Mahayana 302: Kindling the Spark of Awakening

Thu., April 1, 2021
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
New York Online

Registration deadline is Thursday, March 4!

“The only thing that decides if we are a true follower of the Mahayana path is whether or not we have truly generated bodhicitta. It is the key to entering the path because it means to generate the greater vision of liberating all sentient beings from suffering and establishing them in lasting happiness.” —From course text

This is the second of a six-course series on the Mahayana Path. It is devoted to training the mind (lojong), a series of practices brought to Tibet by the Indian master, Atisha—practices that serve as the “kindling” for awakening our bodhicitta, our heart of loving-kindness, compassion and devotion to others. These include the Seven-Fold Cause and Effect Instructions, Eight Verses on Mind Training, and the Seven Points of Mind Training, commonly known as the “lojong slogans.”

The format of the course consists of seven class discussions of materials drawn primarily from the teachings of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, two classes of analytical meditation practice, and a final “dharma exchange” in which students and facilitators discuss study questions that have been distributed throughout the course. Each class begins with 30 minutes of shamatha practice. All classes except the practicums and the dharma exchange will be recorded.

It is recommended that students have had some background in Buddhist studies. In particular, students should have a familiarity with such key Buddhist teachings as karma, rebirth, individual liberation, selflessness, and the Four Noble Truths; and that they have some experience with basic (shamatha) meditation practice.

Nalandabodhi students who have previously taken the Mahayana course series are welcome to join this course free of charge, and are invited to drop in to any of our classes.

Tuition: $45 for Nalandabodhi members, $65 for non-members. Reduced tuition options are also available when you register.
Study materials cost $15 and can be purchased at the Nalanda Store here.
Registration deadline is Thursday, March 4! Once you register below, you will receive the Class Syllabus and Zoom link for attending the class.
