Hinayana 201: The Hinayana View

Thu., October 15, 2020
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Thursdays, Sept. 3 – Oct. 15, 2020

Also known as the “foundational vehicle,” Hinayana is the basis of entering the path as taught in the Vajrayana Buddhist traditions. In this stage of study and contemplation, we take a courageous look at our personal unease and suffering, as well as our comfort and happiness. By working with these experiences, we learn how to step away from confusion and toward truly helping ourselves and others.

Core curriculum materials are drawn primarily from the teachings of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, who also designed the curriculum.

The Nalandabodhi Study Path Series begins with Introduction to Buddhism, followed by the the 2-course Hinayana Series. This is the first of those two courses. While it is recommended that students have taken the Intro Series before taking the Hinayana Series, it is not required; however, some background is highly desirable. In particular, students should have a familiarity with such key Buddhist teachings as karma, rebirth, selflessness, buddha nature, and the nature of suffering; and that they have had some experience with basic (shamatha) meditation practice.

This course is open to the public. Nalandabodhi students who have previously taken the Hinayana Series are welcome to join this course free of charge.

The course will consist of 6 weekly online classes and conclude with a “dharma exchange”— consisting of students’ discussions based on study questions that have been distributed throughout the course. It will also include a meditation practicum (analytic meditation) to help us look at selected topics in a more experiential way.

Course topics include: The Five Skandhas, The Four Seals, The Four Noble Truths, dependent origination, and the views of the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika Schools.

$50 per person for NB members, $60 for non-members.

Please RSVP to Gail Monteforte. Once registered, you will receive the Paypal link for your donation, and the Zoom link for attending the class.

Please purchase from the Nalanda Bookstore. You can order the texts of both courses (HIN 201 and 202) separately or together.
