Introduction to Buddhism

Thursdays, Sept. 8, 2022 – Feb. 9, 2023
7:00 – 8:30 pm Eastern Time

This introductory series of four online courses explores the basic principles of the Buddha’s teachings. They provide practical advice for applying these teachings in our lives and broadening our understanding of the world around us, all the while laying the groundwork for later courses.

The four courses of the series are:

  1. The Life of the Buddha & the Spiritual Journey (INT101): Buddhism as a Science of Mind, Poverty Mentality, Suffering is Fear, Taming the Monkey Mind (Sept. 8 – Oct. 6)
  2. Traveling from Confusion to Original Sanity (INT102): The Four Noble Truths, Working with Emotions (Oct. 13 – Nov. 10)
  3. Karma, Rebirth, and Selflessness (INT103): The Four Seals, The Four Reminders, The Spiritual Friend (Nov. 17 – Jan. 5)
  4. The Four Foundations of Mindfulness (INT104) (Jan. 12 – Feb. 9)

Each course consists of five classes: four teaching classes and a final “dharma exchange” where students present their answers to study questions and engage in general discussion. Each class will begin with a period of shamatha (calm abiding) meditation. For those without prior meditation experience, instruction will be made available. A detailed syllabus will be provided to students enrolled in the series.

Tuition for the entire series is free. The only cost will be for the sourcebooks. These can be purchased online either singly, for each course, or for the entire series at the Nalandastore.

This is a drop-in program. Although full attendance is recommended, feel free to attend according to your inspiration and scheduling constraints.
